To ensure effective management of the Association's affairs, NZALPA has three departments that undertake a wide range of projects on behalf of the members. These departments provide specialized knowledge on a variety of key industry issues, and report back to the Board of Management through the responsible/appropriate Director.
NZALPA Technical, Legal, and Medical and Welfare departments are specialists in their own areas with each being tasked with work assignments by their respective Directors but interact with each other on a variety of issues.
Safety and Technical
NZALPA Technical and Safety Officers and staff work with the airlines, government agencies and of course, pilots and controllers to promote a safer aviation environment. They provide information to members on industry developments, as well as warning against possible safety deficiencies. The department also consults with various international associations and agencies in order to pursue an equivalent level of safety for members as is experienced by their peers engaged in foreign duties.
Our Safety representatives also attend IFALPA training courses relating to aviation accident and incident investigation, as well as assisting in the CIRP (Critical Incident Response Program). This allows NZALPA to remain at the cutting edge of industry developments, and lend support to various agencies and members both in New Zealand and abroad.
Legal and Industrial
An aviation accident or incident is something we all hope to avoid during our careers, but it is always possible that we may be involved in some event that requires legal advice and perhaps representation. It is important to have representation that is experienced in the highly specialized field of aviation law who will therefore be able to provide you with the best assistance available.
NZALPA employs three full-time lawyers who can assist members in all legal matters arising from their aviation related employment. Their advice and expertise ranges from employment contract negotiation and enforcement to representation and advice regarding aviation accidents or incidents. This invaluable service is provided free for NZALPA members as part of their membership package. In many instances engaging the services of an NZALPA lawyer could be expected to save at least the equivalent of a full year's membership fee.
Medical and Welfare
As a function of the size and profile of its membership, NZALPA is able to offer its full financial members some of the most beneficial schemes to ensure their financial security. As Pilots and Air Traffic Controllers are particularly dependent on medical certification for the continuation of their careers, NZALPA provides its members with a number of very competitive insurance schemes ;
Group Disability Insurance provides up to 75% of your normal gross monthly income should you be unable to work for a prolonged period due to a medical condition;
Loss of Licence Insurance provides a lump sum payment should you become permanently unable to continue working due to a medical condition; and Group Life Insurance offers a highly competitive package with one of the most reasonable annual premiums available.
These insurance schemes have been designed in consultation with NZALPA specifically for aviation professionals.
NZALPA has also developed a specialised network of medical, legal, and technical specialists who are familiar with all aspects of the aviation professions, and who are employed to ensure the best possible outcomes and career development for its members.
