Executive Director

Brian Broad commenced in the role as NZALPA's Executive Director in April 2011. Brian brings over 30 years experience in employment/industrial relations and office management and has worked in Australia and New Zealand in the aviation, transportation, manufacturing, education, food and agricultural industries.

NZALPA Counsel

Richard joined NZALPA in 1999. As Legal Counsel his work essentially comprises of litigation and troubleshooting, as well as working closely with the rest of the Legal Team.

After leaving school, Richard performed a variety of jobs, ending up in Australia. Upon his return to New Zealand, he completed a law degree at Auckland University. Richard’s involvement with unions has been an ongoing one; when Richard left school in 1976, union membership was compulsory in New Zealand and he became a union delegate at the tender age of 17.

Following the introduction of the Employment Contract Acts 1991 (and being made redundant under that Act), Richard set up his own industrial law practice specialising in personal grievances until joining the NZALPA team.

Legal Officer

Adam joined NZALPA as a Legal Officer in January 1989, previously being employed for the NZ Nurses Association and the Hotel and Restaurant Workers Union (known now as the Service Workers Union).

Since completing his law degree at Auckland University, Adam has worked for unions in the areas of employment law and negotiation for 30+ years.

His position involves a full range of legal tasks and issues that arise, but bows to the in-house Solicitors in matters of litigation. Adam is a recipient of the NZALPA Scroll of Merit recognising his dedicated work for the Association and its members. Adam has also recently completed his 20th year of employment with NZALPA.

Adam’s interests include trout fishing, judo, cricket, reading, good food and wine, and doing things with his two teenage sons.

Legal Officer

Dawn joined NZALPA in the position of Legal Officer in 2000. Her role is diverse and her responsibilities include negotiating collective employment agreements and resolving personal grievances/employment relationship issues.

Originally from England, Dawn moved to South Africa in 1982. She graduated with a BA (English and Public Administration) and graduated LLB in 1995. Dawn previously practised employment law in the hospitality industry in South Africa before coming to New Zealand in 1999.

Finance and Administration Manager

Sally joined NZALPA in September 2003. As our Finance and Administration Manager, Sally is responsible for providing day-to-day office and financial management, as well as management of all accounting and administration functions for the Association. She has a strong administration background which includes 34 years of office experience in small to medium sized businesses in New Zealand.

Sally has worked in various areas involving office administration and accounts, and has vast experience in sole charge positions. Sally was the Office Manager for Ross Reid Earthmoving Contractors for five years, having sole charge office responsibilities as well as a major involvement in Health and Safety and Quality Management Systems.

Membership Coordinator

Originally commencing employment with NZALPA in January 1999, a brief departure in 2004 saw Eliza working in the recruitment and hairdressing industry.

Eliza returned to NZALPA in 2006 as Membership Coordinator, and is responsible for the day-to-day membership administration functions of the office.

Legal Secretary

Karen joined NZALPA in March 2008 in the position of Legal Secretary for Richard McCabe, Adam Nicholson and Dawn Handforth. Her role comprises working with the legal team and assisting with all secretarial duties, calendar management, travel and accommodation bookings for the team and all members and assisting with bulk mail outs to the members.

Karen is originally from Wellington and has been in Auckland since 1999. She has been working in law for about 7 years. Some of her previous employers include ANZ Banking Group and Phillips Fox in Wellington and Russell McVeagh in Auckland. Karen spent 3 years living in Japan with her husband and children and returned to New Zealand in early 2008.

On returning to New Zealand Karen worked at Ellis Gould in the CBD before deciding to join NZALPA which was closer to home.

Communications Advisor

Mark joined the NZALPA team in October 2008. He is responsible for the day-to-day IT support for the office, maintenance of the five NZALPA websites, membership communication, and design/publication of our membership magazine ‘N’Formation.

Mark was also responsible for the completion of our Erebus project. Mark holds a Bachelor of Applied Communication (Marketing Communication and Public Relations).

Office Administrator

Since 2000, Pamela has been employed as our Administration Coordinator. Part of Pamela’s role is spent acting as an intermediary for the five different types of insurance cover that NZALPA offers its members. In addition, Pamela supports our Finance and Administration Manager in the accounting and administration area.

She is NZALPA’s Payroll Administrator and NZALPA’s First Aid Officer.

Technical Officer

Ross joined NZALPA in early 2009, after a 36 year career with Air NZ. Ross began his career in aviation in 1973, where he completed a 5 year aircraft engineering apprenticeship in engines and airframes. He completed a Trade Certificate and licenses on DC8 / DC10 aircraft and became a Licensed Air Maintenance Engineer (LAME). Upon completion of tertiary study he gained a NZ certificate in engineering (NZCE mechanical) which resulted in a move to the Performance Engineering Section within Air NZ, to oversee the on board engine / aircraft performance monitoring of DC-8 and DC-10 aircraft. Ross gained the required qualifications and was accepted by Flight Operations as a Flight Engineer on the DC8, DC8 freighter, and B747-200 for Air NZ.

Due to the unexpected divestment of the Air NZ B747-200 fleet (following the Air NZ Ansett debacle), Ross folded his wings and moved into Flight Operations Management where he became involved in the setting up of the Airport Certification Group. He gained the APL 106 qualification for airport certification and introduced CBT airport qualification packages as we know today.

Ross worked as the B767 Flight Crew Manager, that lead to the position of International Flight Crew Manager, overseeing the B767, B747, and latterly the B777 fleet both from a crew and engineering perspective. With a grown family, time came for a change in 2007 and he subsequently moved to Whitianga on the Coromandel and project managed the construction of a 48 waterfront unit development which is now successfully completed and was a great challenge. His roots however, are with aviation, so Ross was delighted to be offered the Technical Officer Position with NZALPA and get back to what he knows best.

Receptionist

Halie joined the NZALPA team in May 2009 as Receptionist. Halie works as the administrator for the NZALPA Group Life Insurance scheme, assists in the administration of the Group Disability Insurance scheme and takes care of the ALPA House reception area.
