ATC Director

The role of ATC Director is to co-ordinate the Air Traffic Control "wing" of the Association and represent members employed by Airways New Zealand.

Jim Dunn

Jim began his flying career around 1980 at Ardmore Flying School, where he worked as an instructor and charter pilot until 1985. He worked for a third level airline before taking up ATC in 1986.

He attended the ATC Training Centre in June 1986, and then began with the Nelson tower in December the same year until 1988.  Jim was transferred to Wellington Area Control Center in Wexford Road where he worked as an Area Radar controller until near the end of 1988 (approx).
He left ATC before his first child was born and moved back to Auckland where he was the CFI of the Ardmore Flying School until I was accepted by Air New Zealand as a F27 first officer. Unfortunately Air New Zealand canned the Friendship fleet and made around 87 pilots redundant, Jim was one of the 87.
Jim went back to ATC 2 days after his redundancy took effect. Back in the Wellington Centre, he was soon promoted to an approach radar job on Wellington TMA. A short time later Airways decided that it would close Wellington and relocate those services to Christchurch, another redundancy!!
Jim moved to Christchurch when the centre closed and worked there for a relatively short time before a Supervisor’s job came up in Auckland. After working as a Supervisor for a couple of years, he went back to the boards as an Auckland approach radar controller. Then in 1998, Airways chose to close the Auckland centre and relocate those services to Christchurch. So in January 2000, he moved again to Christchurch where he has been ever since.
Jim has been active member on the Board of Management since around 1992 and on the ATC Council since that time. He has held the position of Southern Branch Chairman, Conference delegate, negotiator, CFT Trustee, ATC Director for 5 years and I’m now doing my second stint as ATC Director.
Jim was born in Auckland, and is married to wife Beth, with 2 teenage children, Sian and Adam.
