One of the main reasons that all members should have insurance is that it gives you both financial security and peace of mind. It is reassuring to know that if you get sick or some other untoward event occurs during work or leisure time, the burden of being off work with no income will be drastically reduced and provision will be available for the financial element of health care. The worry of managing cost is therefore minimized during what is generally a most stressful time.
The New Zealand Air Line Pilots’ Association, in conjunction with third parties, is able to offer members insurance to provide this peace of mind and financial stability. The two insurances offered to members through NZALPA are some of the best currently available and include:
Group Life to provide death cover
Group Disability Insurance (GDI) to provide income protection
Group Life
The Group Life Scheme is perhaps the most inexpensive death cover available on the market today. This scheme covers you and your spouse against death for up to one million dollars. A medical declaration needs to be completed if the requested cover amount for any year exceeds $150,000.
Group Disability Insurance
The Group Disability Insurance Scheme has been set up to provide income protection should illness result in the loss of your Aviation Medical Certificate for an extended period meaning that you are unable to work
A Member may select the level of Benefit Required (within certain parameters) and the length of Qualifying Period. The Premium is calculated based on the benefit level, qualifying period and the Members age. As with Group Life, the rates are very competitive. A medical declaration may be required under certain circumstances by the Insurer.
Should you fall ill and be unable to work the Group Disability Insurance Benefit will ensure you of an income to the level of your selected benefit. This benefit will be paid from the end of your qualifying period until you get your Medical Certificate restored or for a maximum of 24 months.
The qualifying period selected by the member can be set at 30, 45, 90,180, or 365 days and is normally chosen to align with the Sick Leave provisions in your Employment Contract.
Mutual Benefit Funds

In the event of sickness resulting in the suspension or cancellation of your medical certificate, the M.B.F. will give you financial assistance and encouragement to regain your certificate so you may continue your flying or air traffic control career.
Two Mutual Benefit Funds are available for NZALPA members; one for Pilots and the other for Air Traffic Controllers. The two Funds are completely separate from one another, but share the same secretariat.
The Mutual Benefit Funds are independent sickness benefit funds for members of NZALPA. Trustees administer the Funds, some of who are elected from MBF members, others from contributing employers, and independent Trustees from the legal and accounting professions. These Trustees meet regularly to administer your Fund.
If you are a pilot over 19 and under 51 or an air traffic controller over 21and under 45 you can apply to join the Fund by phone, fax or email. You will be sent an application form to complete.
