Dawn has worked for NZALPA since 2000, when she joined the organisation as Legal Officer.
Employment law has been her passion for many years, and was heavily influenced while living in the UK and witnessing the impact of policy reforms on unionism and workers’ rights in the early 1980’s, and Dawn’s experiences while studying for her BA and LLB degrees in South Africa in the late 1980’s and early 90’s.
Early in her career, Dawn recognised the value of interest-based engagement with employers and other parties, leading her to further her skills and experience in interest-based bargaining by attending the prestigious Program on Negotiations at Harvard University.
She continues to stay abreast of developments in rational-problem solving techniques and acts as a mentor to help others improve their skills in these areas.
In recent years Dawn became interested in corporate governance and has undertaken further post graduate study, completing Governance New Zealand’s 3 year Professional Education Programme. She is now a qualified Chartered (Board) Secretary, and is an Associate of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators as well as an Associate of Governance New Zealand. She is putting her governance, compliance and risk management skills to good use in the role of General Manager, a position she moved into in October 2015.
