Hastings Laser Strike Incident

Another laser strike on an aircraft has been reported, this time on an aircraft flying near Hastings.

As Uplink went to print no details were available on the aircraft or any other aspects of the incident.

This follows a laser strike on an aircraft approaching Christchurch Airport from Dunedin in August.

In last month’s Uplink, NZALPA immediate Past President and IFALPA Director Tim Robinson reiterated NZALPA’s call for a full ban on high powered hand held laser pointers.

“Laser attacks are a major threat to the health and safety of pilots and also to the travelling public,” Tim Robinson said. “An attack can cause pilot confusion, temporary blindness and resulting headaches. Often attacks occur during take-off or landing, the most critical time for pilot attention.”
