With sheer grit and determination the ‘Air NZ Classics’ team of NZALPA President Tim Robinson, Sven Zaalberg and Andrew Ware (both A320 Captains) won the men’s veteran team division of the 2019 Kathmandu Coast to Coast multi-sport race, held in early February.
The iconic race, in its 37th year, saw competitors race 243km across the Southern Alps from Kumara on the West Coast to New Brighton in the east. Team event members share the various sections that make up the race. This year Ware completed the cycling legs while Zaalberg did the Goat Pass mountain run and Robinson the Waimakariri kayak section.
The race was completed in sunny and hot conditions but the team was well prepared, had trained hard and apart from some minor hiccups raced fast and strong to win their division in a time of 12hrs 55min 49secs. They thoroughly enjoyed the two great days of this gruelling event.
